Of course, no one knows the exact Number. This Figure can only give a rough Idea. Estimates range from 5 to 70 Million.
Only 40% of found Things find the Way back to their Owners.
This varies greatly depending on the Location and the Thing. For Example, Things that appear to have high personal Value are much more likely to be turned in than Cash.
Good News: This can be doubled to about 80%.
Studies show that found Things are returned to their Owners much more frequently when the Return Process requires less Effort. And that’s precisely where we come in.
How it works
You sticker it.
You stick our special foundathing.org-Sticker on as many of Your Things as you like, in a clearly visible Spot. If You want, You can also write Your Name on the Sticker (Things that look more personal are turned in more often).
Of course, You don’t have to use our Sticker. You can, for Example, design Your own Sticker or write directly on the Thing. Important is that it is clear that the foundathing.org-Website should be visited as soon as the Thing is found.
You lose it.
This is not difficult.
Unfortunately, this happens all by itself.
You report it lost.
At the very Top of this Website, You click “I lost a Thing.” and answer a few Questions. For Example, You can specify what You lost and when or where it happend. You also provide a Way to contact You so we can reach You if it is found. After that, all You can do is wait and hope.
We also recommend that You regularly check local Lost-&-Found-Offices and perhaps inquire at Shops and other Establishments in the Area.
Someone finds it.
While we cannot guarantee it, of course, with a bit of Luck someone will find the lost Thing. If that happens, there’s a good Chance someone will also find the Sticker with this Website.
We are convinced that most People are good People and won’t keep a found Thing to themselves.
Someone reports it found.
Anyone who has found a Thing clicks “I found a Thing.” at the very Top of This website and will be asked the same simple Questions as You.
This Process is designed to be particularly easy and user-friendly to increase the Likelihood that a found Thing will actually be reported.
We connect You.
We continuously check whether any reported lost Things match any found ones. As soon as there is a Match, we will immediately contact You and the Person who found the Thing to reunite it with You.
Depending on the Thing and where it was found, the Person who finds it may be entitled to a Finder’s Fee. However, even if this is not the Case, we recommend that You give a small Token of Appreciation.
Our system ensures that as little personal Data as possible is unintentionally circulated.
This is particularly helpful with vulnerable Things like House Keys, which, if found by the wrong Person, could significantly facilitate a Burglary if they have standard Address Labels attached. Even we at foundathing.org don’t collect any more Data than absolutely necessary. We only gather the required Information if a Thing is actually lost or found.
